Mi Max 2

Pros and cons

  •     excellent battery life
  •     extensive software
  •     Unibody metal housing
  •     no LTE band 20
  •     average camera

The Mi Max 2 of the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi is a phablet with the latest Android. The second edition of the smartphone combines a 6.44-inch display with a giant battery with 5300 mAh. We tested the new Xiaomi and tell you in this review why the value is so great.

Since the end of May 2017, the Mi Max 2 is now officially available and costs around 275 euros. The predecessor played in the same price range, a review of the Mi Max is also available at TechStage. The name “Max” of the smartphone from the high-quality Mi series is program: These are the largest devices that Xiaomi has in the portfolio.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2: design and workmanship

The workmanship of the Mi Max 2 is first class. The case of the smartphone is made of a single block of aluminum. The transitions to the glass surface in front or to the plastic strips, it is seamless, hard edges or large gaps are not present. The disadvantage of these slick metal backs is the low adhesion; they slip out of your hand quickly.

The design of the smartphone is familiar; it has a lot of similarities to the current iPhone generation. But in terms of appearance, the aesthetics-oriented company is now setting its own accents: slim design and highly rounded sides.

If you decide for a Xiaomi Mi Max 2 , you should be aware of its depth and size. The phone is big, really big: 89 mm wide and 175 mm long. The whole technology weighs 211 grams. The operation with a (medium) hand is hardly possible; Here the use of both hands is required.

Speaking of operation: the on / off button and the volume rocker are located on the right side. They have a firm pressure point and are easy to reach. On the back, at the level of the index finger, the fingerprint sensor was placed. It works fast and active, even with the screen off. On the front three Android-typical keys were positioned: “Multitasking”, “Start” and “Back”. The input is capacitive, ie on illuminated touch surfaces, the light sensor in the earpiece controls the light.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2: Hardware

The Mi Max 2 is not a particularly powerful smartphone – such as the flagship Mi 6 from the same house. Nevertheless, the hardware brings enough power for everyday life, and graphics-intensive games run without major problems. Inside is a Snapdragon 625 from Qualcomm. With its eight cores, it works between 650 and 2100 MHz. The performance of the system leads to a delay-free interaction, the visualization of animations and presentation of information run smoothly.

In the benchmark of AnTuTu the Mi Max 2 achieved a score of 58,032. Just for the idea: Current high-end smartphones with appropriate hardware are at 185,000 points. The memory of the smartphone is 4 GB. The internal memory has a size of 64 GB, although there is also a version with 128. After subtracting the operating system and the pre-installed apps, the user has around 49.35 GB left.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2: fingerprint sensor

The fingerprint sensor on the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 sits on the back and works fast.

The Mi Max 2 dominates dual SIM. Your phone supports either a microSIM ( 3FF ) and a nanoSIM ( 4FF ) card or a microSIM and microSDXC memory card. Expanding the memory currently works up to 256 GB, technically even up to 2 TB.

With our Vodafone SIM card, we got a 4G connection in Hamburg on both slots. However, now comes the big problem: The Mi Max 2 does not support the LTE Band 20 – not even the international version we tested. The frequency at 800 MHz is now also used in our city, previously dominated only in rural areas.

Furthermore, the smartphone has the following interfaces: Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, Beidou, Galileo, Glonass and an infrared transmitter for the control of domestic devices. The location with navigation software such as Google Maps or Here WeGo of Audi, BMW and Daimler has worked flawlessly, this has been improved compared to its predecessor. NFC is not on board.
Xiaomi Mi Max 2: 3.5mm jack

On the head side of the Mi Max 2 is the jack connection with 3.5 mm.

Not only the size characterizes the Mi Max 2, but also the battery. Because of the housing design, this is firmly installed and can not be replaced. The capacity of the energy storage is 5300 mAh. Together with the superbly optimized software, the system reaches a running time of up to 3 days. The continuous playback of a video with maximum display brightness runs 11 hours and 42 minutes: crazy! For comparison: The HTC U11 (review) with 3000 mAh just scratched once at 7 hours.

The battery is charged via the USB Type C connector with the older specification of USB 2.0. The power system supports fast loading using the QuickCharge 3.0 method. With the included quick charger, we got the phone from zero to the 100 percent mark in 2 hours and 41 minutes.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2: Display

The Mi Max 2 uses a 6.44 inch display. The panel is an IPS LCD with Full HD resolution, ie 1920 × 1080 pixels. With a screen diagonal of 16.4 centimeters, a higher resolution would have been more useful, we find. However, that would correct the targeted sales price upwards, since other subsystems such as the graphics chip and connected to the processor have to play along. On the other hand, the sharpness with a pixel density of 342 pixels per inch, after all, more than the iPhone, and therefore sufficient, right?

Xiaomi Mi Max 2: Camera

One of the big weaknesses of the Mi Max 2 is the 12 megapixel camera on the back. While you get decent results with the selfie camera, the shots from the main camera are rather sobering. You should not expect much here – and do not equate with a Samsung Galaxy S8 or LG G6. Blame for the mediocre picture quality are the small image sensor with a size of 1 / 2.9 inches and the faint aperture of f / 2.2. Noise and errors are inevitable. In low-light situations, the camera quickly reaches its limits. At the latest then the user needs the integrated dual LED. We really liked the speed of the autofocus, thanks to phase detection, the camera quickly sets the subject in focus.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2: Software

The Mi Max 2 is available in two versions, one for China without Google services and one international version with Play Store and no further restrictions. The latter we have for this review. Both models are equipped with the in-house surface MIUI version 8.5. The underlying operating system is Android OS 7.1.1 Nougat. The security patch is still on Saturday, April 01, 2017, although Google is currently preparing for the July release .

MIUI is a highly personalized software that was obviously resource-saving and cleanly developed. Ex works, the surface comes in a modern and sleek design. If that’s too easy for you, you can start the integrated theme manager and redesign it.

Bloatware – advertising in the form of apps – is not installed on the Xiaomi Mi Max 6. The manufacturer only adds an Office application, which can be uninstalled if desired. Otherwise, there are many useful tools and sometimes redundancies like a second browser, although Google Chrome is already on it. We were really impressed by the function of the dual apps: Via the settings you can open another instance of an application. This is useful for apps where multiaccounting is not possible. WhatsApp is a good example: The smartphone has two numbers, one German and one Chinese. Therefore, the messaging service is necessary twice. Problem: WhatsApp can only be configured with a mobile number. The function of the dual apps avoids this challenge.

Conclusion: buy Xiaomi Mi Max 2?

The Mi Max 2 is a mid-range smartphone, but it is well equipped. Above all, it scores with its processing and the large battery with the long term. Even if the device is used intensively, it will take at least a full working day. Because of the large display, the phone is also suitable for watching videos. With the sonorous stereo speakers this is a lot of fun.

We like the processing of the Mi Max 2, even if it has its disadvantages. In the second generation, the manufacturer has greatly improved compared to its predecessor. Problematic are the missing LTE band 20 and the camera. If you take a picture every now and then and do not need LTE 800, you will get a high quality phablet with a good price / performance
